Firefighters quashed a brush fire Thursday afternoon south of Lokahi Apartments in Kailua-Kona.
The fire, which broke out shortly before 2 p.m., was located in vacant land inaccessible to firefighters, said Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros. It burned about 1 acre and came no closer than 1/2 to 3/4 acre south of the apartment complex located off Kaiminani Drive.
A Hawaii County helicopter was used to perform water drops at the site, which firefighters could not reach. Medeiros said winds were blowing toward the north at just 5 mph, which helped keep the fire from spreading.
No evacuations or road closures were ordered. No structures were threatened.
Also Thursday, Pohakuloa Training Area and Hawaii County volunteer firefighters doused a flare-up that broke out Wednesday in Guinea grass within the previous burn area near Waikii Ranch, said PTA Fire Chief Eric Moller. He said the flare-up occurred about 200-300 yards within an established fire perimeter and posed no threat of escape. Crews will continue to monitor the fire which has been smoldering since last month.
